Question
Help please. I have limited time 1. (10 pts) The exhaust gas coming from a coal-burning furnace (flue gas) usually contains sulfur in the form of So2. When the gas is discharged into the atmosphere the SO2 can eventually react with oxygen and water to form sulfuric acid (H2804), hence, acid rain. The reaction is H2SO4 O2: N2: H2O: 0.2 mole% 20.1 mole% 77.7 mole% 2 mole% MW- 98.09 MW-32 MW-28.02 MW 18.02 (Note: the molecular weight of the humid and polluted air cannot simply be assumed to be 2 What are the mole and mass fractions of each of the components? Yo, N2 H20 XH20 How much sulfuric acid is in each 1000kg f air?
Explanation / Answer
Here given values are mole%.
That is no.of moles of each component out of 100.
Thus,
No.of moles of H2SO4 = 0.2 moles
No.of moles of O2 = 20.1 moles
No.of moles of N2 = 77.7 moles
No.of moles of H2O = 2 moles
Relation connecting no.of moles, mass and molecular weight is
no.of moles = mass in grams/gram molecular weight
mass = no.of moles * molecular weight
Hence ,
Massof H2SO4 = 0.2*98.09 = 19.62 g
Mass of O2 = 20.1*32= 643.2 g
Mass of N2 = 77.7*28.02 = 2177.15 g
Mass of H2O = 2*18.02 =36.04 g
Mass fraction = mass of a substance/Total mass
Total mass =19.62 g + 643.2 g + 2177.15 g + 36.04 g = 2876.01 g
Mass fraction of H2SO4 = 19.62 g/2876.01 g = 0.007
Mass fraction of O2 = 643.2 g/2876.01 g = 0.224
Mass fraction of N2 = 2177.15 g /2876.01 g = 0.757
Mass fraction of H2O = 36.04 g / 2876.01 g = 0.013
