Question

Imagine you add a certain amount of energy to a known amount of aliquid in a perfectly insulated cup. You measure the change intemperature. Then, you decide to alter the experiment inseveral different ways. For each of the alterations listedbelow, state whether the change in temperature will be larger, smaller, or the same as that measured before thealteration. Explain each answer.
  1. Add more heat energy
  2. Heat for a longer time but add the same total energy.
  3. Use more liquid in the cup.
  4. Increase the temperature outside of the cup.
  5. Start with warmer liquid.
  6. Change to an equal mass of liquid with a larger specific heatcapacity.
  7. Use the volume of a denser liquid with the same specificheat.

Explanation / Answer

1.change in temperature will be greater because more heat willresult in a rise in temperature 2.no change, it does not matter how long a process takes. thechange in energy is the same therefore it will result in the samechange in temperature 3.The change will be less because now you have add heat to moremass and thus the energy input is distributed 4.the change will be the same because temperature outside does notmatter because the system is perfectly insulated 5.The change in temperature will be the same because a change isthe difference between the final and initial temperature. Eventhough the final temperature is higher , the difference will remainthe same. 6.it will be less, with higher specific heat you have to input moreenergy to raise the temperature 7.it will be less, with higher density you have more mass and thuswill need more energy to raise its temperature
