Question

A) Why is the term single replacement reaction used to describe thereaction between sodium metal and water ?
2Na(s)+H2O(liquid)-->H2(g)+2NaOH(aq)

B) A student took 0.0040 moles of kyptonite metal and reactedit with water in a manner similiar to that used in this experiment.She then titrated the resulting solution and found that it required2.0 ml of 6.0 M HCl to react with the solution
1) how many moles of HCl was used in the titration ?

2)What is the formula of kyptonite hydroxide compound formedin the reaction with water ?

I couldn't figure out these problems if you could help me Iwill be glad.

Explanation / Answer

2Na(s)+H2O(liquid)-->H2(g)+2NaOH(aq) Since in this reaction Na is replaced by Hydrogen or Hydrogenis replaced by Na that means one is replacing the position ofother,that's why this term single replacement is occured.
B) A student took 0.0040 moles of kyptonite metal and reactedit with water in a manner similiar to that used in this experiment.She then titrated the resulting solution and found that it required2.0 ml of 6.0 M HCl to react with the solution In the above Equation 2 moles of metal produces 2 moles ofbase So comming to the problem          0.004 molesof metal produces 0.004 moles of base No . of moles of HCl n = Molarity * Volume in L                                      =6M * 0.002 L                                     = 0.012 moles 0.004 mole of base requires 0.012 moles of acid So the no . of moles of acid is 3 times than that ofbase formed . So the formula is M(OH)3 where M is the metal
