Question

can some one name this molecule?

Explanation / Answer

I don't know how to name it straight off but I plugged it intoChemDraw (a chemical drawing program that can fit names tostructures) and it spat out: 2-(4-((3,5-di(pent-1-ynyl)phenyl)ethynyl)-2,5-bis(3,3-dimethylbut-1-ynyl)phenyl)-1,3-dioxolane Here's an explanation: Dioxolane = The 5-membered ring with 2 oxygens(the 'head' of the molecule man...)                      1,3 means the oxygens are at positions 1 and 3 in the ring 2-(4-((...phenyl)-1,3-dioxolanemeans the 'substituent' (rest of the molecule man's body) isattached to Carbon 2 of the 1,3-dioxolane group. The 'chest' of the molecule man is made up of aphenyl (aromatic) ring. The 'arms' you should beable to name as a 4-carbon chain (but-) with atriple bond (-ynyl) at Carbon 1(but-1-ynyl) and 2 methyl groups at position 3(3,3-dimethyl) =>3,3-dimethylbut-1-ynyl. The 'arms' are attached to the 'chest' at positions 2 and 5 of thephenyl ring (the 'head' is the highest priority group, so thecarbon it is attached to is designated position '1'). So head + chest =2,5-bis(3,3-dimethylbut-1-ynyl)phenyl)-1,3-dioxolane('bis' is sort of like the prefix 'di', meaning there are 2 of thatgroup. I think you use 'bis' for long molecule substiuents like theone we've got and 'di' for small substituents like methyl.) The 'waist' of the man is a 2-carbon chain(ethyl-) but it has a triple bond between the 2carbons => ethynyl The... uhh... 'rear end' of the molecule person is also a phenylring. This time the substituents ('legs') are 5-carbon chains(pent-) with a triple bond at carbon 1(pent-1-ynyl). There are two 'leg' groups, andthese are attached to carbons 3 and 5 of the phenyl ring (carbon 1is where the rest of the molecule is attached to) =>3,5-di(pent-1-ynyl)phenyl)ethynyl Finally, this 'waist + lower body' fragment isattached to carbon 4 of the 'chest' =>4-((3,5-di(pent-1-ynyl)phenyl)ethynyl) Put it all together to get the full name:2-(4-((3,5-di(pent-1-ynyl)phenyl)ethynyl)-2,5-bis(3,3-dimethylbut-1-ynyl)phenyl)-1,3-dioxolane I'm not quite sure why the'2,5-bis(3,3-dimethylbut-1-ynyl)phenyl)' part isplaced before the'(4-((3,5-di(pent-1-ynyl)phenyl)ethynyl)' part,though... =S
