Question: Consider a solution containing one of the following anions:Cl-,Br-.I-,C2O42-,CO32-,NO3-.The solution does not liberate a gas when treated with dilutesulfuric acid. The solution does not reduce an acidic solution ofpotassium permanganate. The solution does produce a whiteprecipitate when treated with a Ba2+/Ca2+solution; this precipitate is insoluble in 6 M HCI. Identify theanion and briefly state how you determined this from the datagiven. If more than one anion fits the test results presented, whattests could be performed to distinguish them? Explanation / Answer

CO32- liberates CO2 gaswhen treated with dilute sulfuric acid. So the anion cannot beCO32- Anions Cl-,Br-.I-,C2O42-,NO3-doesnot liberate a gas when treated with dilute sulfuricacid. The solutions containing the anionC2O42- when treated withCa+2 or Ba+2 produces a whiteprecipitate of CaC2O4 or  BaC2O4. When 6 M HCl solution is added to theanionic solution the oxalates are soluble. So no anion givenabove responds to the given tests.
