Question
A galvanic cell consits of a cadmium cathode immersed in aCdSO4 solution and a zinc anode immerse in aZnSO4 solution. A salt bridge iconnects the twohalf-cells. Write a balanced equation. Cadium is cathode so it's supposed to gain electrons andzinc anode sould lose electrons. But I'm not sure where tostart from (CdSO4 or just Cd? ZnSO4 or Zn?).And because new gained or lost charges are not given, how am Ispposed to know how many e- each loses or gains? I thinkSO4 can be just ignored; however, what othercompounds can be ignored like SO4? (e.g. Cl fromHCl...etcetc) A galvanic cell consits of a cadmium cathode immersed in aCdSO4 solution and a zinc anode immerse in aZnSO4 solution. A salt bridge iconnects the twohalf-cells. Oxidation half reaction : ----------------------- Zn looses 2 electrons to form Zn2+ Zn ( s) ----> Zn 2+ +2e- Since there are excess no. of electrons on the electrodeit is negatively charged & is known as negativeelectrode. Reduction half reaction : ----------------------- Cd 2+ gains the 2 electrons from Zn to form Cd. Cd2+ + 2e- ------> Cd Since this reaction involves gain of electrons it isknown as reduction half cell.It is the cethode( positiveelectrode) So the over all reaction is Zn ( s ) + Cd2+ ------> Cd + Zn2+ Reduction half reaction : ----------------------- Cd 2+ gains the 2 electrons from Zn to form Cd.
