Question

According to Archimedes principle, the mass of a floating objectequals the mass of the fluid displaced by the object. Use thisprinciple to solve the following problems.
a) A wooden cylinder 30.0cm high floats vertically in a tub ofwater with density = 1.00g/cm3 . The top of the cylinderis 14.1 cm above the surface of the liquid. What is the density ofthe wood?

b) The same cylinder floats vertically in a liquid of unknowndensity.The top of the cylinder is 20.7 cm above the surface of theliquid. What is the liquid density?

Please help, I'll rate life saver!!!

Explanation / Answer

wt of water displaced = h*r2 = (30-14.1)* r2 =wt of block = ' 30* r2 --->   ' = *15.9/30 =0.53 = 0.53 g/cm3
forunknown liquid '' * (30 - 20.7) * r2 = ' * 30 * r2
  '' = ' 30/9.3 =1.71  g/cm3

--->   ' = *15.9/30 =0.53 = 0.53 g/cm3
forunknown liquid '' * (30 - 20.7) * r2 = ' * 30 * r2
  '' = ' 30/9.3 =1.71  g/cm3
