Question

Suppose a metallurgist wanted to use cobalt(II) carbonate as asource of cobalt metal. (a) What products would you expect from calcination of thissubstance? The answer is CoO, CO_2 (b) With what reagent could you react the product of thecalcination in a roasting operation to form Co metal? Iassume that it is Coke, but what is the Chemical equation forCoke? (c) Write balanced chemical equations for the processes discussedin parts (a) and (b). 1. CoCO_3 --> CoO + CO_2 (a) What products would you expect from calcination of thissubstance? Explanation / Answer

(a) What products would you expect from calcination of thissubstance?
    CoCO3     --->        CoO   +      CO2                             Cobalt oxide   Carbon dioxide
(b) With what reagent could you react the product of thecalcination in a roasting operation to form Co metal?
                  Calcination and roasting are carried out in various types offurnaces, most important of which is reverberatory furnace. In thistype of furnace since the fuel does not come in direct contact withthe charge , it can be used for the reducio as well as oxidationprocess. For the reduction process  the material is mixedwith a reducing agent coke.                   In the given case Co(II) is reduced to Co , so it is a reductionprocess , for this the material is mixed with a reducing agentcoke.
