Question
I can't seem to figure this problem out, I'd really appreciatesome help! Thanks in advance! A solution of 4-methyl-3-penten-2-one in ethanol gives anabsorbance of 0.52 at 236 nm in a cell with a 1 cm lightpath. Its molar absorptivity in ethanol at that wavelength is12,600. What is the concentration of the compound. I can't seem to figure this problem out, I'd really appreciatesome help! Thanks in advance! What is the concentration of the compound.Explanation / Answer
Ok, there is an equation forabsorbance, and here it is
A=ebc
Where A is absorbance (no units,since A = log10P0 / P)
e is the molar absorbtivitywith units of L mol-1cm-1
b is the path length of the sample- that is, the path length of the cuvette in which the sample iscontained. We will express this measurement in centimetres.
c is the concentration of the compound insolution, expressed in mol L-1
