Sodium bicarbonatecan be used as a wash to remove any acidic impurities from a"crude" liquid, producing a purer sample. Reaction of sodiumbicarbonate and an acid to give a salt and carbonic acid, whichreadily decomposes to carbon dioxide and water:
Sodium bicarbonate reacts with acetic acid (CH3COOH)to form sodium acetate
Sodium bicarbonate reacts with bases such as sodium hydroxidetoform carbonates
Sodium bicarbonate reacts with carboxyl groups in proteins togive a brisk effervescence from the formation of CO2.This reaction is used to test for the presence of carboxylic groupsin protein.
