My first question is: How does the acid/base strength of an oxiderelate to its position on the Periodic Table of Elements? (I knowthat these trends are related to electronegativity but I'm not surewhat the actual trend is)My second question is: If one considers the following compoundsKNO3, Ni(NO3)2, Ca(NO3)2, Cu(NO3)2, Cr(NO3)3, Zn(NO3)2,Fe(NO3)3, Al(NO3)3, Co(NO) (The Nitrates) what difference inthe d electron configuration of the metal ion causes some of themto be colorless and others to have color?

Generally the elements of the Right hand side of theperiodic table tends to form Acids as they are electronegativeinnature. The presence of the oxygen atom with thenon-metal increases the acidic behaviour of thecompounds Generally the presence ofunpaired electrons in the Transition elements imparts colour to thecompounds. Cobalt , chromium , Iron,copper (II) compounds imparts colour due to presence of unpairedelectrons.
