Question
1) what is the majoradvantage of using steam distillation as opposed to regulardistillation to isolate organic compounds? 2) in this experiment(steam distillation of theessential oil of caraway seeds) the initial boiling pointshould be a little less than 100C , but the final boiling pointshould be 100C. why should the boiling point rise as thedistillation progresses? 3) initally the distillateis quite cloudy. why? 1) what is the majoradvantage of using steam distillation as opposed to regulardistillation to isolate organic compounds? 2) in this experiment(steam distillation of theessential oil of caraway seeds) the initial boiling pointshould be a little less than 100C , but the final boiling pointshould be 100C. why should the boiling point rise as thedistillation progresses? 3) initally the distillateis quite cloudy. why?Explanation / Answer
2) Boiling point, as with melting point, decreases whenimpurities in the solution are present. The impurity will decreasethe boiling point of the oil of caraway seeds until the impurity isdistilled out. Since the caraway oil and impurity "like" eachother, meaning they dissolve in one another, the molecules of onecompound will meet the molecules of the other compound at theinterface between the crystals and together boil at a lowertemperature. After distillation is complete, all theimpurities are filtered out and only A remains. A will haveit's normal boiling point which will be higher than what youstarted with.
3) The distillate could be cloudy in the beginning becausethere may still be an emulsion in the distillate and thedistillation should be redone.
