Explanation / Answer

Boiling chips are small, irregularly shapedstones added to liquids to make them boil more smoothly mainly indistillation. They provide nucleation sites so the liquid boilseasily without becoming superheated. Without boiling chips, aliquid heated in a smooth container can become superheated andrelease vapor suddenly, sometimes violently. This sudden bubble ofgas can cause the solution and reagents to be thrown out of thecontainer, possibly causing severe burns, ruining an experiment, orsimply making a mess.

Boiling chips are typically made of a porous material, such asalumina, calcium carbonate or carbon, and often have a nonreactivecoating of PTFE (Teflon). This ensures that the boiling chips willprovide effective nucleation sites, yet are chemically INERT.
