Question

On December 1, 1783, Jacque Charles became the first human to pilota non-tethered hydrogen balloon. He flew the balloonfor fifteen miles and stayed in the air for a total flight time of45 minutes. The balloon was made of silk coated with a thinlayer of natural rubber and had a diameter of 27 ft. Hegenerated the hydrogen gas needed to lift the balloon by mixing alarge amount of iron with aqueous sulfuric acid. If he used1000 lbs of iron and excess sulfuric acid, how many liters ofhydrogen gas were made?
Fe (s)+ H2SO4 (aq) ------> FeSO4 (aq) + H2 (g)
I am having a really hard time with this problem, I can't evenfigure out where to start because it is giving me pounds and askingfor liters...please help...

Explanation / Answer

Mass of iron = 1000 lbs                    = 1000 lbs * (453.592 g/ 1 lb)                    = 453592 g . Moles of Fe = mass / atomic mass                   = 453592 g/ 55.85 g/mol                    = 8121.61 moles . Fe (s) + H2SO4 ------> FeSO4 + H2 (g) we can see 1 mole of hydrogen being released for every mole ofFe consumed. Hence moles of hydrogen formed = moles of Fe = 8121.61moles . If temperature and pressure are given, they can be used. Or we can assume an ambient temperature of 25 C = 298K and pressure of 1 atm . PV = n R T Volume V = n R T / P                = 8121.61 moles * 0.0821 L-atm/ (mol.K) * 298 K / 1.00 atm                = 198701.72Liters
