Question

In looking at the allowed quantum numbers, we noticed that thevalues for n, l and ml formed a pattern. For the n = 5level, the orbitals in the l = 4 sublevel are labeled "gorbitals".
How many g orbitals are there in the n = 5 level?1
How many electrons can be held in these g orbitals? 2
How many total electrons can be held in the n = 5 level?3

How many individual iron atoms are contained in 36.2 g of iron?Enter your response to two places past the decimal point.1

Explanation / Answer

l = 4   = >   ml (magnetic quantum number)can go from -4, -3, -2, -1 , 0 , 1 , 2 ,3 , 4 or 9 orbitals each orbital can have 2 electrons => 18 # of electrons = 2*n2 = 2*25 = 50 Recall that there are 7 f orbitals, 5 d orbitals, 3 p orbitals, and1 s orbitals (see a pattern?) Thus there are 9 + 7 + 5 + 3 + 1 = 25 total orbitals in n = 5. 2electrons per orbitals => 50 electrons ======================= 36.2 grams iron* (6.022e23 atoms/ 55.847 g) = 3.91424069e23 atoms ~3.91 x 1023 atoms Also, please do not post two separate questions in future posts
