Question

Using anything from Chapter 5 of Raymond Chang's 9th Ed. ofChemistry. Please answer this problem.

A given volume of chlorine gas required 68.6 seconds to effuse (toflow out)
from a hole in a chamber. Under the same conditions, anothergas
required 85.3 seconds for the same volume to effuse. Calculate
the molar mass of this gas.

Please answer this in any way you'd like if chapter 5 (ideal gaslaw, Boyle's Charles's or Avogadros Law. etc) isn't involved. Thankyou much!!!

Explanation / Answer

Rate of effusion =kP/M M= molar mass, P= pressure, K=constant Molar mass of Cl2 =71 if M is the molar mass of gas, => 68.6/71 =85.3/M => M= 109.77 so Molar mas of Gas = 109.77
