When carrying out the acid-base extractions in lab, you notice thatyou were asked (in the “Hints of Preparation”) toextract with sodium bicarbonate only once while the proceduredirects you to carry out the extraction with a 2nd amount of sodiumbicarbonate. Why might the omission of the second extraction causeyou to obtain less than 100% recovery of the substance you areextracting?

After drying the ether layer containing the biphenyl with calciumchloride pellets, you remove the ether from the drying agent intoanother tared test tube. Why would the percent recovery be lower ifyou do not wash the calcium chloride pellets with additionalamounts of ether and add the additional ether portions to the taredtest tube?

Explanation / Answer

wouldn't the calcium chloride pellets absorb some of your product resulting in lower percent recovered.....  washing prior to will prevent unnecessary loss...  atleast that is what i've found and confirmed in orgo and biotech labs.
