Question

During cytokinesis in plants, the cell plate is formed by fusion of vesicles. Which organelle makes the vesicles? What is contained in these vesicles? CONNECT WITH THE CONCEPTS Colchicine is a chemical that inhibits mitotic spindle formation. IF dividing animal cells are treated with Colchicine, explain what you will expect to see in the cell and why? Chemotherapy is a common treatment for cancer. However this treatment has many unpleasant side effects including hair loss and increased susceptibility to infection. Explain the reason for these side effects at the cellular level? Eukaryotic cells divide through mitotic cell division. If a recently divided cell has 12 chromosomes: How many molecules of DNA are there in the G-1 stage? How many molecules of DNA are there in the G-2 stage?

Explanation / Answer

3. In contrast to the animal cells, plant cells have cell wall in addition to plasma membrane, so cytokinesis is not possible in plant cells. As an alternative to this, plant cells develop new cell wall and plasma membrane at the middle of the parent cell.

A series of membrane bound vesicles begins to accumulate and fuse together near to metaphase plate and eventually form a “flat cell plate.” These vesicles are formed by Golgi apparatus. The membrane portion of the flat cell plate fuses with the plasma membrane of the parent cell.

Thus, two new adjacent plasma membranes are formed at the middle, which split the parent cell into two. The cell plate membrane encloses a material which serves as the foundation for the new cell-wall segments of the daughter cells.

b). The vesicles derived from Golgi apparatus contains components of cell wall and cell membrane.
