Open Source project / PowerPoint
Research an open source software project. Examples of open source projects are listed:
Open Office (a Microsoft Office look-alike)
Firefox (a browser)
MySQL (a DBMS)
Apache (a web server)
Ubuntu
Android
Cassandra
Hadoop
In MS PowerPoint, create a presentation with slides that describe the open source software and how it works. Discuss the role this open source software has in management information systems.
Remember, management information systems is the management and use of information systems that help organizations achieve their strategies (page 10 of your textbook (David Kroneke, 2015. Using MIS 2014 (7th ed.).
Your PowerPoint must have a minimum of four slides. Be sure to use the 7X7 rule in PowerPoint: no more than 7 lines per slide and no more than 7 words per line. Use of images, graphics, and diagrams is encouraged. Be sure to include your sources on a references slide in APA format.
Explanation / Answer
I Open source refers to a program or software in which the source code (the form of the
program when a programmer writes a program in a particular programming language) is
available to the general public for use and/or modification from its original design free of
charge. Open source code is typically created as a collaborative effort in which programmers
improve upon the code and share the changes within the community. Open Source Initiative is
that when programmers can read, redistribute and modify the source code for a piece of
software, the software evolves. Open source sprouted in the technological community as a
response to proprietary software owned by corporations
Distribution of License
The rights attached to the program must apply to all to whom the program is redistributed without the need for execution of an additional license by those parties.
License Must Not Be Specific to a Product
The rights attached to the program must not depend on the program's being part of a particular software distribution. If the program is extracted from that distribution and used or distributed within the terms of the program's license, all parties to whom the program is redistributed should have the same rights as those that are granted in conjunction with the original software distribution.
License Must Not Restrict Other Software
The license must not place restrictions on other software that is distributed along with the licensed software. For example, the license must not insist that all other programs distributed on the same medium must be open-source software.
Programmers & Corporations - Why Invest in What is Free?
A software programmer really has his or her own reasons for contributing to open source projects. Some may just be looking for fun or a challenge, while others are looking to improve skill and build on their programming abilities, or they may want to belong to a group project. In many instances there is the opportunity to make money as open source projects can be funded by government or corporate sponsors. Unlike commercial projects, open source projects allow the programmer's name to be known, which benefits a programmer's name and portfolio — which can lead to future jobs with other funded open source or commercial projects.
The hype and benefits of open source has not gone unnoticed in the commercial world where some corporations have jumped on the open source bandwagon. Since commercial software is sold for profit, one may wonder why a company would be interested in open source projects. In many cases companies are able to profit through selling add-on tools or modules, or paid consulting services and technical support for the program
The Android Source Code
Android is an open source software stack created for a wide array of devices with different form factors. The primary purposes of Android are to create an open software platform available for carriers, OEMs, and developers to make their innovative ideas a reality and to introduce a successful, real-world product that improves the mobile experience for users.
We also wanted to make sure there was no central point of failure, where one industry player could restrict or control the innovations of any other. The result is a full, production-quality consumer product with source code open for customization and porting.
Get the complete Android platform and modify and build it to suit your needs. You can also contribute to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) repository to make your changes available to everyone else in the Android ecosystem.
Port Android to Devices
Port the latest Android platform and create compelling devices that your customers want.
Build Accessories
Sometimes, a device can't do it all. Tap into Android's open accessory standard and build accessories to complement the wide variety of Android-powered devices.
