The cost of the Microsoft Office desktop productivity software nowadays is from $200 to $250. But today we have many more comparable softwares that solve the purpose of MSOffice and still are free. For example: Google docs(open source), IBM Lotus symphony, Thinkfree office, Zoho and openoffice.org(open source).
If we compare the cost of MSOffice and openoffice then the open source software is completely free.
Openoffice also has all the necessary softwares of the MSOffice package. It has Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Database, Drawing tool etc. So it can successfully work at the same compatibility of MSOffice. But MSOffice has been so familiar around the world and in our lives, that whenever we think office work , we think MSOffice.
Some popular open source productivity suite are: Libreoffice, Abiword, Freemind, Gnumeric, Spreadsheets, Google docs and openoffice.org

If I would adopt open source software instead of MSOffice? MSOffice has been taught to us in schools and in home. We are working on MSOffice since we started using Computers so switching to another software wont be possible even though others are available freely.Because we have hands on long practice MSOffice.
Familiarity of MSOffice and my log term practice is the criteria. I wont like to learn other softwares just for the purpose MSOffice is already solving for me since long time upto my satisfaction level.
