Question
The H2 column density, N(H2) may be estimated directly from the 12CO(J=1-0) line using an empirical "X-factor":
1. Using python, make a 2D array of the 12CO(J=1-0) integrated intensity, performing the sum across the entire velocity range. Save as a FITS file with an appropriate header.
3. Assuming X = 2.0 x 1020 K-1 [km/s]-1 cm-2 use the result of part b to make an array of the H2 column density. Use this to compure the total H2 mass of the cloud by considering the area in cm-2 that a pixel subtends on the sky.
If possible, annotated python code is all I want. The saving as FITS files I can do on my own but the code is the problem I have so any help from anyone is most appreciated.
