Question

Being a witch is an autosomal recessive trait. Hermoine Granger is a witch, but both of her parents arc normal (muggles). How is this possible? Explain how this is possible using words and a punnet Square. What were the Genotypes of both of her parents? What were their Phenotypes? What was the probability that Hermoine would have become a witch? In a particular breed of dogs deafness is an autosomal recessive trait. Two dogs are mated. One dog is deaf: the other dog is normal but one of its parents was deaf. What is the probable percentage of normal dogs and of deaf dogs that might be found in the litter? Give the probable distribution of phenotypes and genotypes. Retinoblastoma (a rare cancer of the retina) is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. A heterozygous woman was successfully treated for this disease. If she has a normal husband what percent of her children may be affected with retinoblastoma? Blood types are a Codominant trait, where both alleles are expressed and none arc masked. A father comes in to the hospital crying that his son can't be related to him because he has a Blood type of A and his wife has a blood type of B, but their child has a blood type of O. You know that he has nothing to fear, it is possible that the son is indeed his and that his wife did not cheat on him. Explain to him how this is possible.

Explanation / Answer

1. Autosomal recessive means, both the alleles must be of recessive type. In this case, Hermoine is witch, means her genotype is homozygous recessive (say ww). As her parents are normal, they might be both carriers, and consider their genotypes as wW.

Now, cross between heterozygous parents will have the offspring with the following genotypes.

Ww* Ww = WW, Ww, Ww, ww.

Of the children, 50% of offspring are heterozygous (carriers similar to parents), 25% are homozygous dominant (normal) and another 25% are homozygous recessive (ww, affected).

Thus, the probability that Hermonie would have become a witch is 1/4 or 25%.
