HELP

1. Get 2 articles (one each on): 1) interspecific competition 2) intraspecific competition 2.Describe whether competition is: -exploitative -interference 3. If exploitative - tell if it is consumption, overgrowth, or pre-emption. If interference, tell if it is overgrowth, allelopathy, territorial, encounter, overgrowth, or undercutting. 4. Describe the methods used to test competition. 5. What were the characteristics that made the competitors either good or poor ones? 6. Describe the outcome - was there a species that won? Did they coexist?

Explanation / Answer

Since this question has multiple sub-parts I will answer only first four according to the answering guidelines.

Q1. 1) Interspecific competition - This is a form of competition in which the individuals of different species compete for the same resources in an ecosystem. 2) Intraspecific competition - This form of competition involves the individuals of the same species

Q2. Exploitative competition - In such a competition the organisms interact indirectly by consuming scarce resources. Interference competition - In such a competition the organisms interact directly by fighting for scarce resources.

Q3. Expoitative competition may involve consumption. For e.g. Plants consume nitrogen by absorbing it into their roots, making it unavailable for nearby plants. Interference competition may involve allelopathy, territorial encounter.

Q4. Methods used to test competition may include additive and substitutive experiments. Additive experiments measure the competition between species in a completely randomized set up whereas substitutive experiments evaluated the growth of these species alone.
