Question

Apply conditional formatting to a cell based on comparison to self

Hi,

I have a spreadsheet for calculation of line items. Column A is the name of the owner of a royalty interest, and there may be multiple line items for the same user.

I would like to format the cells so that if a cell value is the same of the cell above it, it is formatted light grey - to de-clutter the visual appearance. For instance, if A2=A1, apply the formatting to A2.

I haven't been able to get this to work so far. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Explanation / Answer

Hi,,

Conditional format, use a formula: =A2=A1.

If your column has headers, use =A3=A2.
