Question: Consider the statues of each of these people. Among them, who was likely to have been infected during this outbreak? Who previously?

Based on the data of Irene picket, Margaret Bennett and Kenneth Rhineheart we conclude that Kenneth are likely to have contracted the disease during the outbreak since both of them supplied positive stool samples on July 4th and negative stool sample at the end of July. These dates correspond with 30-day incubation period of the disease. Kenneth Rhineheart didn’t have symptoms of typhoid fever before the dinner on may 30. He most likely contracted the disease through consumption of the contaminated food. Even though Irene Picket also did not have prior to the picnic dinner and she did not bring anything to the dinner, the data show that E.Pickett, who may have been relative living in the same household as Irene, did bring the potato salad. The potato salad had a low relative risk so it not likely that Irene had the disease before dinner. Margaret Bennet, who prepared both a potato Salad and macaroni Salad, never provided a negative still sample. Since her stool sample were always positive yet she was asymptomatic we can conclude that she may have been the carrier of the disease and the cause of the contamination due to the macaroni salad she prepared

Explanation / Answer

Typhoid fever is caused by Salmonella and the infection can be caused due to consumption of contaminated food and water. Since, Margaret Bennet being a carrier might have been introduced the typhoid bacilli into the salads she prepared under unhygienic conditions. The bacilli entered into the food contaminate the food and consumption of such contaminated food caused typhoid fever to Kenneth Rhineheart. This can be known by results of stool examination during 30 day incubation period of the infection. Irene Pickett did not have infection prior to the picnic dinner. Thus, it can be concluded that the contaminated food prepared by Margaret Bennet who is a carrier of the Salmonella caused typhoid fever in other two individuals.
