What is the phenotype of your new dragon?
Which traits are inherited from the mother dragon? AND Which traits are inherited from the father dragon?
Were any traits expressed by the offspring that differed from either or both of the parents? If so, what were they?
How does meiosis allow for variation in offspring?
How does fertilization allow for variation in offspring?
Explanation / Answer
1. The phenotype of the new dragon is Lanthana and colour is blue.
2. The wings are inherited from mother dragon and the colour is inherited from father dragon.
4. Meiosis and fertilization are related, without one of those processes organisms wouldn't need the other. Meiosis is the process that generates sperm and egg cells - those cells have half the "regular" number of chromosomes that are in all of our other cells. Fertilization is the way to create a cell that once more has the full complement of chromosomes necessary for growth, development, and survival.
Each of our cells carries two copies of a chromosome, one from each parent. But, they aren't exactly identical. They have the same genes in the same order, but genes come in different versions so that you can have two versions of the same gene. During meiosis, the two identical-but-not-really copies of a chromosome can exchange small sections with one another (called "recombination"). This creates new chromosomes. The new offspring has a combination of chromosomes that didn't exist before (one from each parent), so that's more variation.
