You are an 18 year old athlete and have been confirmed by an MRI that you have a complete rupture of you ACL in your knee. You plan to stay active and play sports for many years to come. Your doctor has recommended ACL reconstruction surgery. You have researched the options to this surgery. Which specific ACL surgery is best for you?
Explain the specifics of the surgery and why it is the best reconstructive surgery for you and your lifestyle.
Would this surgery be the best for a non-active 55 year old? What specific ACL reconstruction surgery would be more appropriate for this individual? Explain.
Explanation / Answer
ACL stands for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Surgery. This is a rupture in the ligament which joins the upper leg bone and lower leg bone. This surgery is of two types:- one is ACL repair surgery and second is ACL reconstruction surgery
In ACL reconstruction surgery, the torn out/ruptured ligament is removed completely and a new graft is placed. And in ACL repair surgery the ruptured ligament is repaired. Repair surgery is used in case of fractures, but if the complete ligament is ruptured, then reconstruction surgery is recommended. In this case also, ACL reconstruction surgery is recommended. Arthroscopic surgery, in which a small cut is made should be done...
Complete rehabilitation of the patient will take about 4-6 months and after 6-7 months the patient should resume rigorous sports activities, although mild sport activities can be started before.
For a non-active 55 year old, this surgery won't work. At this age, how will the graft work???? Post this question again....for a detailed answer....
