Question
Data range too complex
I am trying to add more data to a chart. The existing chart has two years worth of data, three columns and 12 rows for each year. I would like to add a third year but when I click on select data the Select Data Source box opens up and says "The data range is too complex to be displayed. If a new range is selected, it will replace all the Series in the panel." Sure enough if I go ahead and enter the data anyways all the previous data disappears.
This is not a complex chart. I have 12 months with a target for each month and amount reached. On the chart it shows three lines, one for the target and the other two are years 2011 and 2012. I would like to add a forth for 2013.
Explanation / Answer
Hi..
I think... that you might be trying to using the input box at the top of the Select Data dialog "Chart Data Range")?
Don't.
Lower down you'll see two white areas side by side. In the left-hand one, click Add and then add the references for your new series data (what you see will depend on what type of chart you are using, hence these somewhat vague instructions).
I think that you get that "data range too complex to display" message when the ranges that the chart uses are not contiguous or are on different sheets. It's refering to the formula in that top input box (that can't be displayed in the dialog), not the actual chart.
Hope that helps.
