Question

The US population hit 325 million in 2017. That means 325 million men, women, and children that all depend on water to survive.  As our population grows, so does our dependence on our water supply. Water is needed for agriculture, industries, and domestic use (bathing, washing, watering our lawns, and drinking). People who own farms claim that they need water in order to produce a large crop to feed the people of this country. Industries claim that they need water to cool their factories and that their factories provide jobs. Cities claim that domestic use is the most important because we all need water to survive. There are also people that believe that no one should have control over the water supply. In your opinion, who should have first priority over the water use? Who should have the last priority? In times of water shortage, should we fine people for improperly using water (e.g. watering their lawns in a drought)? Make sure that you defend your position.

Explanation / Answer

Answer:

In my opinion, water should be first provided to farms and for domestic use equally. This can be followed by the supply of water to Industries (this will be the last priority). At the most basic level, we need food, shelter and warmth and even though industries have defined our idea of development, it cannot replace the importance of food and nutrition.

As for the last question, water shortage, even though is a critical problem, can be solved with small everyday steps. It is crucial to understand that water can be harvested and stored for use during shortages but simply applying a fine will not be an effective answer.

Along with a fine, I believe that if we developed water-saving and water-recycling products and made sure these products were cost effective and easy to use, people would actually benefit from buying these products and hence would look forward to using them. E.g. water from the bath and the washer can be used to water gardens and lawn as long as natural washing products are used instead of using chemical suds. The idea that self-sustainable homes can exist while still maintaining their urban sophistication, can be a good approach to get more people included in these environment-friendly plans and innovations.
