Question
1. A researcher is exploring a tropical rainforest that is destined to be clear cut and turned into a palm oil plantation, six months in the future. She encounters many species that are new to science.
a) Which species concept would be most expedient and effective, in the process of collecting, naming, and describing what she finds?
b) Go online and research. Give at least three examples of actual species that are new to science, that were discovered in tropical rainforests, within the last few years. Why don’t northern temperate forests yield as many new species, nowadays?
c) Why is palm oil a subject of concern for conservationists? In a few complete sentences, explain.
Explanation / Answer
a) Phylogenic species concept is an effective method in determining the gene flow in the populations.
b) An orchid Sobralia imavieirae, a fish Dicrossus warzeli, a monkey Callicebus caquetensis and so many other new species have been found in tropical rain forests. Competition at the ground level for light and food lead to developing plants which respire by air roots living on the branches of higher plants. The warm humid environment of tropical rain forests lead to speciation compared to northern temperate forests.
C) Palm plantations became a threat to the other plants. As these palm tree plantations lead to deforestation. It resulted in placing so many living organisms of tropical rainforests into endangered species.
