Question

an aqueous solution of an ionic compound is placed in an open beaker. Assuming constant temperature and pressure the osmotic pressure of the solution : a] decreases over time b] increases over time c] stays the same d] would change, but the direction would depend on the external temperature and pressure e] would change, but the direction would depend on the identity of the ionic compound please tell me how/why you arrive at your answer. i thought osmotic pressure only applied to solutions and permeable membranes??

Explanation / Answer

putting osmotic pressure in simple words, assume a solution is connected to a pure solvent with a semi permeable membrane, now solvent diffuses into solution through the membrane and the pressure u need to apply on solution side to stop this flow is the osmotic pressure. Now, coming to your question if you keep an aqueous solution in an open beaker with the time only water evaporates but solute remains in beaker, means concentration of solution increases by time and hence if u connect this to a water beaker through a membrane there will be more flow of water into solution meaning more osmotic pressure and hence your answer is b) increases over time
