Question

Acrylonitrile, C3H3M, is the starting material for many synthetic fibers and can be made using the following reaction: C3H6 + NO -----> C3H3N + H2O + N2 [Unbalanced] a. If 21.6g C3H6 is reacted with 21.6g NO, how many grams of C3H3N can be produced? b. Which reactant from part (a) is in excess, and how many grams would remain at the end of the reaction?

Explanation / Answer

2C3H6 + 3NO -----> 2C3H3N + 3H2O + (1/2)N2 moles of C3H6 = 21.6/42 = 0.51 moles of NO = 21.6/30 = 0.72 moles of NO is in excess. C3H3N formed = 0.51 x 53 g = 270.3 g
