Question

A mixture of 80.0mL of hydrogen and 60.0mL of oxygen is ignited by a spark to form water. a) Does any gas remain un-reacted? Which one? SHOW WORK (you need to start with writing and balancing the equation). b) What volume of which gas (if any) remains un-reacted? (Assume the same conditions before and after the reaction.) SHOW WORK.

Explanation / Answer

2 H2 + O2 ------> 2 H20 This is the balanced equation.... For two moles of Hydrogen , one mole (half of hydrogen moles ) of oxygen reacts to form 2moles of water...Hence for 80ml of hydrogen, only half of it, that is, 40ml of oxygen reacts to form water. Hence the gas that remains unreacted is 60-40 = 20ml and it is oxygen. So the answers are as follows : a) Yes oxygen remains unreacted b) Volume of oxygen that remains unreacted is 20ml
