Question
Ecology
Some recent paleoecological work done at the site of the new Visitor Centre by the parking lot suggests that 200 years ago, Eastern white pine was a much more common tree in this area. But even in the least disturbed site (site 1), there Disturbance and succession are very few white pine of any size, despite the fact that logging (the major cause of the disappearance of white pine) has not occurred for at least 56 years. Why do you think that this species has not recolonized at any of these sites?
Explanation / Answer
The white pine are dying due to pine wilt disease. The disease is caused by a nematode which spreads through beetles.
