Question
I have been asked to identify an unknown compound and was able to obtain the IR spectra for this compound. However, I am having difficulty analyzing this representation. The major peaks are labeled and valued yet I still can not come to a conclusion to what exactly this compound is. I was also able to obtain a boiling point measure of this unknown compound and got a B.P=120.5 C which is is between 1-butanol and n-butyl acetate for their respective b.p ranges. Any help would be very much appreciated!
Explanation / Answer
1-butanol should has a strong absorption of OH at about 3500 cm-1 There has no any peak > 3000 cm-1 indicates that the unknown is not an alcohol. the peak at 1733.76 cm-1 corresponds to the C=O group of an ester. Thus it may be n-butyl acetate.
