Question
An unknown white solid is either NaC2H3O2, AgNO3 or BaCl2. The white soliddissolves in water. The dissolved unknown precipitates when either aqueous
potassium carbonate or aqueous lithium bromide is added. What is the unknown
(answer in the box)? Please show balanced reactions (with subscripts for the physical
states) for all the precipitation reactions.
Explanation / Answer
First, sodium acetate, NaC2H3O2, will not produce insoluble products with either of the added solutions. AgNO3 will produce a white precipitate with potassium carbonate, K2CO3, and a yellowish precipitate with LiBr solution. 2 AgNO3(aq) + K2CO3(aq) --> Ag2CO3(s) + 2 KNO3(aq) AgNO3(aq) + LiBr(aq) --> AgBr(s) + LiNO3(aq) BaCl2 will react with K2CO3 to form an insoluble product but LiBr will not form an insoluble product with BaCl2. The answer to your question is that the unknown is AgNO3.
