Question

6 1 Which of the following statements is false? To eject an electron from the surface of a metal, the wavelength of electromagnetic radiation must exceed the threshold wavelength for this metal. The energy of an atom decreases when it emits electromagnetic radiation. Energy levels for a hydrogen atom depend only on the principal quantum number (n). For a given value of the angular momentum quantum number (I) there are 21+1 allowed quantum states. For a given value of the principal quantum number (n) there are n2 allowed quantum states.

Explanation / Answer

False : To eject an electron from the surface of a metal, the wavelength of electromagnetic radiation must exceed the threshold wavelength for this metal.

Longer the wavelength lesser is the energy. To eject an electron from the metal surface energy larger than threshold energy should be supplied. So higher energy means smaller wavelength. Wavelengths lesser than the threshold wavelength can only eject electrons.

True statements:

When an atom emits light it is giving out its energy, so its energy will decrease.

E = -13.6/n2 eV for hydrogen atom. So energy depends only on n.

2l+1 is the degeneracy.

n=1, 1s - 1 state

n=2; 2s, 2px,2py,2pz - 4 states
