Question

ADOITIAL EXERCISES 1 Briefly describe the perform a titration without adding it? 2. Andy is trying to figure out the concentration of a solution of sodium bicarbonate in water. He has access to solid hydrochloric acid that he can use to make a solution to react with this sodium bicarbonate solution. Which liquid should he use as the titrant and which liquid should he use as the analyte? Briefly explain your reasoning What is the molarity of a solution made by adding 2.213 grams of KHP to 50.0 mLs of water? Show your calculations 3. How many grams of sodium hydroxide are required to make 150 mls of a 0.184 M solution? Show your calculations 4. what volume (in mLs) of of 0.20 M NaOH solution is required to neutralize a solution made with 2.33 g of KHP? Show your calculations. 5,

Explanation / Answer

Q1.

phenolphthalein is an indicator, it is used in order to identify the ENDPOINT of the titration.

It turns from colorless to pink when acid -> base transitions and vice versa

If we do not add this, we will NOT see any change in the titration, that is, endpoint will never be measured

Q2

titrant --> known concentratoin --> HCl

analyte --> unkown concentration --> NaHCO3

We can measure HCl concentration, and then add it solowly to the unkown until neutralization

Q3

Molarity = mol/V

mol = mass/MW = 2.213/202.4 = 0.010933

V = 50 mL = 50*10^-3

[KH¨P] = mol/ V = 0.010933/(50*10^-3) = 0.21866 M
