Question
So I'm in an introductry physical chemistry class and we've just finished covering the Boltzman distribution. I'm a little bit confused on the meaning of the KBT value (Boltzman constant) in this equation.
As defined by my professor;
q: on average, how many energy levels are thermodynamically accessible to the molecule (KBT > E, E > KBT : I know the meaning of this in terms of energy levels)
En: Gap of higest energy level and lowest
KBT: *Avg energy avaliable per mode from surrounding- Don't understand what this means, please help.
Explanation / Answer
kB is the Boltzmann constant, and it defines the relationship between the kinetic energy of each molecule in an ideal gas and its absolute temperatue(T).
The kinetic energy per mode in the classical limit is 1/2kBT.
Average energy per mode is kBT
