Question
Extracurricular Requirement for CHM223L Please answer the following questions. They should be fairly detailed. . You should use the techniques that we have covered in the CHM223 lab Each write-up should be up to 2 pages long. 1. A chemical compound in a certain plant's leaves is a good remedy for tooth-ache. How would you go about isolating and purifying the particular substance from the leaves? Include all the techniques and concepts that you will need to employ. 2. A chemist named WW synthesizes a certain drug to 99% purity. His student named JP repeats the same procedure but his drug is only 78% pure. Starting with the 78% pure drug, JP tries different methods and finally succeeds to bring up the purity to 99%. How does he do that? Include the different techniques and concepts that you think he could have used.Explanation / Answer
1. To isolate and purify the required compound from leaves you can use various distillation methods
like simple distillation if you want more yield, steam distillation if the compound is heat sensitive etc
or you can employ chromatographic methods like TLC or IR to do the job as they are good at
isolating and analyzing the chemical compounds in the natural sources such as leaves in this
case.
2. This student named JP's aim is to increase the purity level of the substance, but the fact is that
when trying to improve purity% the yield will tend to reduce, depends on what phase needs to
be separated so that we can increase purity.
To separate solids from liquids Centrifugation, Filtration methods can be used. This is done
for almost all as the first step of purification.
Distillation is the best method to increase the impurity.
Extraction based on the phases this method can be employed, here different solvents
and chemical substance are used to increase the extraction efficiency thereby increasing
the purity %. This is the only method where JP can achieve 99 % purity i.e) by performing
extraction multiple times. This method seems reliable in this case.
