Question

I'm confused on what this question is asking of me and how to solve it. We have an unknown amino acid and 0.100 M NaOH being titrated. the graph was generated from given data points of pH and 0.100 M NaOH in mL.

10 4.54 11 5.05 From the separation between two end points, calculate the number of moles of NaQH used and, thus, the number of moles of amino acid in your samples, and (assuming 100% purity) thus calculate the molecular weight of your unknown amino acid. Assume you started out with 0.2489 g of amino acid 3. 12 5.5 13 6.0

Explanation / Answer

From the graph,

20 unit difference is there between two end points. i.e 20 ml of NaOH was used between two end points.

Molarity of NaOH = 0.1M

1000mL contains 0.1 mole NaOH

1 mL contains 0.1 / 1000 mole NaOH

20 mL contains 0.0001 * 20 = 0.002 mole NaOH

Here,

0.002 mole NaOH is used to neutralize whole amino acid i.e 0.2489g

Now

0.002 mole = 0.2489 g

1 mole = 0.2489 / 0.002 = 124.45 g

Thus, molecular weight of amino acid = 124.45
