Question

Post-lab Questions: Answer these post-lab questions neatly and concisely on a separate sheet of paper. Your answers will be evaluated and graded on quality, not quantity of response! Write all responses in ink. Responses written in pencil [in part or whole] will be accepted for a grade, but ANY requests for a regrade may be denied. This also applies to responses written in pencil and then overwritten in ink and/or responses obliterated with white-out-type materials and then revised Post-lab Question #1 : while I haven't done the experiment, my suspicion is that this experiment would fail if Nal were substituted with NaCl to make chlorosalicylamide. Explain why the experiment would not be (as) successful with NaCl. (2 points) Post-lab Question #2 : would you expect salicylamide to react faster or slower with Br when compared to its reaction with I? Explain your answer. (2 points) Post-lab Question #3a: Of the two possible products shown for the reaction below, predict the major product of the reaction shown below. Explain your rationale. (2 points) OCH3 OCH3 OCH3 CH CH3CVAICI3 or CH H3

Explanation / Answer

#1 We are to make chlorosalicylamide, therefore we need a chloride source. Thus the reaction would fail we where to use NaI inplace of NaCl for the reaction.

#2 Salicylamide would react faster with Br+ as compared to I+. I having larger size stabilizes the +ve charge much eficiently and thus reaction is slower as when smaller size Br+ is employed for the reaction.

#3 The first product wherein, newly added CH3 adds to the ortho position of carbon having electron donating -OCH3 group is the major product. -OCH3 donates electron by resonance and makes the ortho position more electron rich for the incomming electrophile to add.
