Question
You decide to do an experiment to determine the effect of using fresh water mollusks for aquatic remediation in Passion Puddle and how they affect water quality index. In the lab, you set up 3 large tanks of Passion Puddle water for the control group and 3 large tanks for the experimental group. What is the independent variable in this experiment? Name four dependent variables that you should measure. What are three controlled variables? What should be included in the control group? The experimental group?Explanation / Answer
Independent variable is the one which we can manipulate, means we can control it or cannot be controlled always (means a fixed one). Independent variable does not depend on dependent variable, but the dependent variable alters with independent variable (explanatory variable is used as a predictor of response variable).
In this case, the independent variable is, fresh water mollusk. The four dependent variables to be measured are, quality index in test group, quality index in control group, extent of aqauatic remediation in test an control groups.
The controlled variables are those that can be added or removed to determine the relation between dependent and independent variables. The controlled variables are water quantity, tank size and time.
