Question

Do not round Intermediate calculations, however for display purposes report intermediate steps rounded to four significant figure*. (live your final answers) to three significant figures. Two blocks A and H weighing 130 and 204 lb, respectively, are released from rest as show n. At the moment of release the spring is unstretched. In solving these problems, model4 and B as particles, neglect air resistance, and assume that the cord is inextencible. If B hits the ground, then its maximum displacement is equal to the distance between the initial position of B and the ground. Determine the maximum displacement and the maximum speed of block B if alfa = 0 degree. the contact between A and the surface is frictionless. and the spring constant is K = 26 lb/ft.

Explanation / Answer

Maximum displacement = -2ft <---- -ve sign for direction downwards

Initial Potential energy of the system :

PEi = mB*g*h = 204*32*2 = 1.31*10^4

Now, after reaching the ground,

the PE of the system = 0

So, all the PE is converted to KE of the two bodies

So, 0.5*(130+204)*v^2 = 1.31*10^4

So, v = 8.86 ft/s <------answer
