Question

Given a genetic code table and a double-stranded DNA sequence such as the one below:

5’ ACATGCATACCGCATA 3’
3’ TGTACGTATGGCGTAT 5’

Using the bottom strand as the template strand, transcribe into mRNA, then translate into a polypeptide sequence.Label the 5’ & 3’ ends of the mRNA, and the N-terminus & C-terminus ends of the polypeptide.

Repeat the process from part a, but use the top strand as the template strand.

Hint: they should give you different polypeptides! Also, pay attention to where translation begins.

Explanation / Answer

* The sequence of mRNA is 5' ACAUGCAUACCGCAUA 3'

* NH2 - Methionine - Histidine - Threonine - Alanine - COOH (coding triplets are highlighted in bold in the mRNA)

* The sequence of mRNA is 5' AUACGCCAUACGUACA 3'

* NH2 - Methionine -Arginine - HIstidine - Threonine - Tyrosine COOH
