Question

The following is a picture of a double slit interference pattern. (note the title)

a. If the horizontal scale length shown is in meters, and the screen is 3.25 m from the two slits being illuminated by 651 nm light, how far apart are the two slights?

b. It is noted that not only does one observe the double slit pattern, but also the single slit pattern (green line), what then is the width of each slit?

c. If the same slit pattern is at the same time also illuminated by light of 465 nm. At what distance from the central maximum on the screen will a bright fringe from one pattern first coincide with a bright fringe from the other?

Explanation / Answer

a) Using the double slit equation a = D/y

a = 651*10^-9*3.25/0.1 = 2.12*10^-5 m

b) Width of slit = a =  D/y

a = 651*10^-9*3.25/0.1 = 2.12*10^-5 m

c) y =  D/a = 465*10^-9*3.25/2.12*10^-5 = 0.0713 m
