Question

A circuit is constructed with five resistors and a battery as shown. The values for the resistors are: R1-R5-75 -R2-142 , R3-1060, and R4 -134 . The battery voltage is V-12 V RI R2 R3 R5 ) What is Rab the equivalent resistance between points a and b? ) Submit 2) What is Rac, the equivalent resistance between points a and c? 3) What is I, the current that flows through resistor Rs? Submit 4) What is 12 the current that flows through resistor R2? Submit 5) What is 1, the current that flows through the resistor R1? Submit

Explanation / Answer

1) To find the equivalent resistance, we short all batteries in the circuit. => Rab = ((R2 + R3) || R4 ) || (R1 + R5) = 55.06 ohm

2) Rac = (((R2 + R3) || R4 ) + R1 ) || R5 = 51.26 ohm

3) Eq. resistance across battery = R1 + R5 + (R2 + R3) || R4 = 237 ohm. => I = 12/237 = 0.05 Amp

4 ) current through R1 = 0.05 Amp. Using current division formula: Ir2 = I*R4/(R2+R3+R4) = 0.0175 Amp

5) current through R1 = through R5 = 0.05 Amp

6) Vab = Ir2 (R2+R3) = 4.34 V
