/13/2018 03:00 PM A 85.7/100 28/2018 04:46 PM Print Calculator Periodic Table tion 3 of 19 Sapling Learning Two samples of sodium chloride were decomposed into their constituent elements. One sample produced 2.55 g of sodium and 3.93 g of chlorine. Which of the following could be the results of the the other sample, being consistent with the law of constant composition (also called the law of definite tion of proportions or law of definite composition)? O 5.45 g of sodium and 839 g of chlorine O 5.45 g of sodium and 12.0 g of chlorine O 5.45 g of sodium and 4.36 g of chlorine O 5.45 g of sodium and 1.21 g of chlorine

Explanation / Answer

mass of sodium= 2.55 gm and mass of chlorine= 3.93 gm

moles of sodium chloride= mass/atomic weight= 2.55/23 =0.11087

moles of chlorine = 3.93/35.5 = 0.1107

molar ratio of Na:Cl= 0.11087 :0.1107 = 1:1

this ratio of molles meed to be maintained in the other sample as well

for 5.45 gm of sodium , moles= 5.45/23= 0.24 and moles of chlorine in 8.39 gm of chlorine = 8.39/35= 0.24

here also, the ratio is 1:1. since the mass of sodium in other cases remained the same and chlorine amount has changed, they are not expected to maintain the ratio of 1:1. So First one is correct.
