Question

1.) Christopher drew a graph to show changes in the mass of Barium-122 (Ba) during 10 minutes of radioactive decay. Based upon the results, what is the half-life of Barium-122 in minutes?

Explanation / Answer

1. Half Life is defined as : the time taken by a radioactive isotope to decrease by half of its initial value.

Initial mass of Barium = 80g

It decomposes to 40g in 2 minutes

So by definition of half life : half life of barium 122 is 2 minutes

2. The above question is beta negative decay.

In this decay the total mass of reaction and the number of proton remain same on both side of reaction.

So since electron has no mass( 0 ) thus the resultant species has mass equal to that of pottasium(K) = 42

Proton number of electron = -1

Thus 19 = -1 + x

where x is the proton number of resultant species, So x = 20

Thus the species is 20Ca42

3.  Half Life is defined as : the time taken by a radioactive isotope to decrease by half of its initial value.

In the figure shown above the initial mass of Iodine is 32g

It decreases to 16g ( half of its value ) in 8 days as shown in graph.

So the half life of Iodine is 8 days.

hence your answer.
