Question
1. Select a disease or injury of interest that is currently treated with a medical device composed of synthetic and/or biologic biomaterials. Describe the mechanism of the disease/injury.
2. Describe the basic components and functions of the tissue/organ that the medical device needs to replace.
3. Describe the type(s) of biomaterial(s) that are used in the medical device to treat the condition selected in question 1. Describe two properties of a biomaterial that enable that biomaterial to meet the needs of the medical device.

Explanation / Answer
1)
For consider a disease, Cardiac Arrhythmia:
Cardiac arrhythmia takes place when conducting pathways are blocked. In this condition, the heart beat rate is too slow and irregular. Cardiac arrhythmia caused due to several causes, which include fibrillation of atria. Usually, the SA node sends the impulse that causes the atria to contract for every 0.85 seconds. This impulse is picked up by atrioventricular node (AV node) and passes to purkinje fibers that make them ventricles to contract.
The failure of SA node, results Cardiac Arrhythmia, but heart still produces beat due to the impulses generated by AV node but the beat is slower. To correct this condition “artificial pace maker” that provides electrical stimulus to the heart for every 0.85 seconds can be arranged.
2)
The artificial pace maker is also called cardiac defibrillator. It has to implant at the place of SA node in the heart. The chief function of heart is to pump the blood to various organs of the body.
3)
The type’s biomaterial(s) that are used in the artificial pace maker are titanium alloy, which is insulated with polyurethane sheet and a pulse generator, two electrodes and leads (insulated wire).
